The Transition Years Discovery Series

The Transition Years Discovery Series is a two session course designed especially for parents of adolescents who have autism spectrum disorder.

Course Goals

To discuss the concerns and challenges of adolescents with ASD

  1. To review how ASD affects parenting
  2. To learn strategies for developing independence
  3. To support social cognition and communication
  4. To learn strategies for understanding sexuality
  5. To provide guidance for transition planning
  6. To discuss strategies to address behavior challenges

  2. Developing independence in daily living skills
  3. Developing independence in hygiene
  4. Understanding social skills
  5. Developing reciprocal relationships
  6. Teaching about sexuality
  7. Providing guidelines for privacy and safety
  8. Learning about transition
  9. Developing self-determination skills
  10. Addressing behavior concerns
  11. Dealing with emotions and letting go

Presenters
The Transition Years Discovery Series is presented by staff and parents who belong to the Autism Society of Minnesota.   During the two sessions, participants will meet a variety of parents who will share practical ideas and insights.  Course participants will also receive a binder of information which will be a useful resource for many years.

When and Where
The Transition Years Discovery Series will be offered on the following dates in 2008.  Register well in advance, for class size is limited.  The class will be held at the AuSM office in St. Paul. Confirmation and directions will be sent two weeks before the start date of the session you sign up for.

Dates   
March 4 and 11, 2008, 6:30 - 9:30 pm
October 25, 2008, 9:30 am- 3:30 pm.  Lunch will be on your own.

Cost
$40 per family. This fee is for two attendees. Single parents are encouraged to bring a friend or grandparent. Please do not bring children as childcare is not offered.  Special reduced rates are available for parents who are unable to pay the entire fee.  Call the AuSM office at (651) 647-1083 for more information.
