Asperger Syndrome Discovery Series

The Asperger Syndrome Discovery Series is a three-session course designed especially for parents of children who are diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome.

Course Goals

  1. To understand Asperger Syndrome
  2. To learn about community resources
  3. To help parents learn effective strategies for home and school
  4. To provide insight and support for parents on the joys and challenges of rearing a child with Asperger Syndrome

  1. Evolution and definition of Asperger Syndrome
  2. Feelings experienced by parents
  3. Neurological findings
  4. Learning why, when, and how to tell your child, family, and friends about Asperger syndrome
  5. Characteristics of Asperger Syndrome
  6. Understanding your child’s difficulties with socialization and behavior
  7. Understanding sensory needs
  8. Using visual supports
  9. Effective strategies for home and school
  10. Using social stories/comic strip conversations
  11. Ideas to improve family life
  12. Services and resources to help you and your child

Presenters
The ASDS is presented by staff and parents who belong to the Autism Society of Minnesota. During the three sessions participants will meet a variety of parents who will share practical ideas and insights. Course participants will also receive a notebook of information which will be a useful resource for many years.

When and Where
The Discovery Series will be offered in the fall of 2007 and in the winter and summer of 2008.  Each session will run from 7:00-10:00 p.m. on the Tuesday evenings listed below or will meet for one Saturday session.  Register well in advance, for class size is limited.  The class will be held at the AuSM office in St. Paul.  Confirmation and directions will be sent via email about one week before class.

January 12, 2008 (8:30-4:00, lunch on your own)

March 8, 2008 (8:30-4:00, lunch on your own)
June 10, 17, 24, 2008 

Cost
$50 per family. This fee is for two attendees. Single parents are encouraged to bring a friend or grandparent. Please do not bring children as childcare is not offered. Special reduced rates are available for parents who are unable to pay the entire fee. Call the AuSM office at (651) 647-1083 for more information.
