Discovery Series PDD-NOS

The Discovery Series is a four session course designed especially for parents of children who are recently diagnosed with autism or pervasive developmental disorder (PDD).

Course Goals

  1. To understand autism/PDD
  2. To learn about community resources
  3. To help parents gain skills to improve communication, teach daily skills, accommodate sensory problems, and change problem behavior
  4. To provide insight and support for parents on the joys and challenges of rearing a child with autism/PDD
  5. To help parents work effectively with school in developing and implementing an appropriate IEP

  1. Definitions of autism/PDD
  2. Feelings experienced by parents
  3. Learning about therapies — ABA and floor time
  4. Developing communication
  5. Teaching daily living skills, like dressing and using the bathroom
  6. Helping with sensory needs
  7. Using visual supports
  8. Strategies to change problem behavior
  9. Using social stories
  10. Ideas to improve family life
  11. Community resources

Presenters
The Discovery Series is presented by staff and parents who belong to the Autism Society of Minnesota. During the four sessions, participants will meet a variety of parents who will share practical ideas and insights. Course participants will also receive a notebook of information which will be a useful resource for many years.

When and Where
The Discovery Series will be offered three times in 2007. Each session will run from 6:30–9:30 p.m.. Register well in advance, for class size is limited. The class will be held at the AuSM office in St. Paul. Confirmation and directions will be sent via email one week before the start date of the session you sign up for.

Cost
$50 per family. This fee is for two attendees. Single parents are encouraged to bring a friend or grandparent. Please do not bring children as childcare is not offered. Special reduced rates are available for parents who are unable to pay the entire fee. Call the AuSM office at (651) 647-1083 for more information.
