Essentials Series
presented by Sheila Merzer, MA, LP & Renae Ouillette, MA, SPsyS
Friday, March 30, 2012
Autism has its basis in brain functioning. However, the brain-based issues that affect development vary from child to child. This multimedia presentation looks beyond the label of “autism” to provide information needed to identify a range of underlying core deficits that impact the learning and behavior of individuals across the spectrum. This presentation is unique because it directly links the core areas of deficit with practical strategies to support improved communication, regulatory skills, academic learning and social relationships. The content has relevance for developing curriculum, proactive and reactive behavior supports and treatment approaches. Too often labels define how we see and treat individuals with autism. Be inspired to see the uniqueness of each individual and how to use this knowledge to support growth.
You will learn:
- To identify at least four brain-based difficulties impacting the functioning of children and
adolescents with ASD.
- To develop at least one intervention promoting improved adaptive functioning for each
identified area of difficulty
- The difference between reactive and proactive behavior supports
- The difference between stopping behaviors in the moment and creating alternative coping skills
