AuSM Art Skillz

Session 1 - JUNE 25-28, 2013
Create with AuSM this summer! With a ‘hands on’ approach, we’ll use simple drawing, painting, print-making and collage experiences to access creativity as we explore social skills. We’ll consider such things as understanding body language and facial expressions, what it means to have a conversation, and how to understand our feelings and the feelings of others. No prior experience or special ability in art is needed. Our curriculum is designed to foster self-awareness, personal expression, empathy and creativity in a fun, playful, low stress environment.
Art Skillz will be offered for four consecutive days in two sessions, one for elementary (ages 8-11) and one for tweens (ages 12-14). Art Skillz is limited to 7 participants for each session. Registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

- Intro to the Art—Explore the different types of art supplies and try out different mediums.
- Introduce the idea of community and what it means.

August 14 - Day Two: A Day in the Life
- Visual check-in—Create an image introducing who you are (likes and dislikes, personality traits, physical characteristics, etc.).
- Continue discussion about community
- “A Day in the Life”—each student will need to bring a disposable camera. Your assignment (with the help of parents, as needed) is to use the camera to visually illustrate what a day in your life looks like. Take pictures of family, friends, home, pets, activities, your routine - things that are important to you.
August 15 - Day Three: Inside/Outside
- Visual check-in—Create an image to show where you are today.
- Body tracing for Inside/Outside drawings—Have your body outline drawn on large paper. Use media of your choice to illustrate what you “look like” and how you feel on the inside. Then put things on the outside of your outline, things that describe or affect you: family, friends, school, society, etc.
August 16 - Day Four: Community
- Visual check-in—create an image to show where you are today.
- Create our Autism Community—Decorate a large puzzle piece using your developed photos to create a unique perspective of yourself. When you are all finished, you will see how each participant's puzzle piece is individual, but fits together to create one larger community.
