Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I get into AuSM Summer Camp?

A: To register your child for any of the AuSM Camps, you must be a current member of the Autism Society of Minnesota. If you are unsure whether you are a member with AuSM, call 651.647.1083. Become a member immediately online or print off our membership registration form and send in with payment by fax or mail to our office. You also can join or renew your membership using the AuSM camp registration form. Camps are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Q: Which AuSM Summer Camp is right for my child?

A: Camp Discovery focuses on teaching and fostering self-advocacy. Discovery campers must be independent in their self-care, able to stay with a group, and able to interact positively with a small group. The Camp Discovery staff-to-camper ratio is 1:4. If these requirements are difficult for your child, Hand in Hand may be a better fit. Another aspect to consider is how well your child does in group settings, such as accepting and following directions within a group setting. If this tends to be a stressor for your child, Hand in Hand may be a better option. Also, keep in mind that Hand in Hand has a staff to camper ratio of 1:1. If your child needs the support of a 1:1 counselor, Hand in Hand is the best fit. Consider the sorts of settings your child thrives in as you choose between Hand in Hand and Discovery.

Campers are not considered registered for camp until the completed camper packet has been reviewed by the camp directors. If directors determine that the camper requires more support than what Camp Discovery or Camp Wahode offer, the camper may be moved to Camp Hand in Hand if space is available. Or, in the case of Camp Wahode, the family may be asked to provide a PCA or other support.

Q: Do I have to live in Minnesota to send my child to AuSM Summer Camp?

A: You do not have to live in Minnesota to send your child to camp, but you must live in the five state surrounding area, which includes Wisconsin, Iowa, South Dakota and North Dakota.

Q: If I choose one week of AuSM Summer Camp, will that exclude me from getting into another week if the week I chose is full?

A: No. It is recommended that you indicate a first and second choice when selecting your preferred weeks of camp. This will increase registration options and facilitate camp assignment.

Q: Can my child attend more than one week of camp?

A: Due to the high demand for residential camp spots, campers may attend one week of residential camp. Wahode Day campers may attend one or both sessions of Wahode Day Camp.

Q: Does my child need to get a physical to attend camp?

A: Yes, camper physicals are required for Camp Hand in Hand and Camp Discovery. AuSM accepts physicals completed within 12 months* of camp start date. (*Some camp materials may note physical requirements being within 24 months; the correct period is 12 months in 2020.) Current "Medication Adminsitration Forms" are required for ALL campers.

Q: Do waivers apply and are scholarships available?

A: Click here for more information about waivers and scholarships.
